Many yogis set up a dedicated space for their yoga practice in their homes. And some are lucky enough to have a full room they can use for this!
But when it’s actually time to get started furnishing it, it’s easy to either lack inspiration or get completely overwhelmed with the flood of choices.
This guide will talk you through many of the decisions you need to take for creating your very own yoga room, and offer some ideas and inspiration as well.
Enjoy!

What should be in a yoga room?
So let’s get started with the absolute minimum you’ll need.
Luckily, there are only very few things that are really absolutely necessary for a yoga room: A yoga mat, your props, and possibly a mirror so you can check your alignment.
Everything else is icing on the cake and depends on your individual preferences. Lots of room for being playful!
For more input check the sections on yoga room furniture, wall decor, and other ideas below!
How to set up a yoga room at home
For your home practice, it’s always good to find a space where you won’t be disturbed all the time. A corridor where everyone steps over you while you’re in Savasana? Not so ideal. A quiet, cozy corner in your bedroom? Much better!
Maybe you’re really lucky and you can dedicate a whole room to your yoga practice. That’s the dream for every yogi, isn’t it?
Once you’ve found your space, decide on the general vibe you want to go for. Do you like bright, minimalist, and airy? Or do you prefer a colorful, boho vibe? Take a moment to close your eyes and visualize yourself doing yoga in that room. What would enhance your practice?
You could even start a Pinterest board to collect some ideas first and get a first impression of your taste. Or have a look at my board with inspiration for a yoga room here. (Leave me a follow while you’re there, will you?)
What is the best color for a yoga room?
So now that you know where you’re setting up your little zen space, and what vibe you want it to have, it’s time for another really important question!
What color to paint your yoga room?
Of course, there isn’t one right answer to this question. But some colors will work better than others. Let’s go through the most popular ones!
White

White is my personal favorite by far! First of all, it works well with everything. No matter which mood you want the end result to have, white is the ultimate backdrop for all your decor.
Even if you decide to redecorate with a completely different mood, the white will still work.
It’s also undeniably the best wall paint color to reflect as much light as possible. For me, living in a place where the winter months are long and dark, that’s super important.
Yellow

Yellow is perfect if you want your yoga room to burst with positive energy. It creates an atmosphere of happiness, enthusiasm.
There is also a downside to coloring your yoga room in the color of the sun though. Yellow is a high-energy color. So for long, relaxing sessions of restorative yoga, it might just not work too well.
On the other hand, if you really like high-energy yoga styles or if you have a rather dark room to bright up, yellow might just be your color!
Purple

Purple has a special meaning for yogis who are interested in the chakras. It is the color of spirituality and the crown chakra. Sounds perfect for a yoga room, doesn’t it?
Again, this depends on your preferences and on your room.
Do you want your space to be really calming and soothing? And do you have enough light in your room to balance the dark, cool tones of a deep purple? Then purple will give you exactly what you want!
If, on the other hand, you already have a pretty dark room, I’d recommend to only use purple for accents, if at all. For example, getting a purple yoga mat, meditation pillows and so on.
Blush

Blush has been a very trendy color in recent years, also thanks to Instagram. It can create an airy, youthful vibe.
If you don’t mind painting it over in a while when everyone’s really tired of blush pink, this is definitely a pretty option. And, other than some darker colors, it’s really easy to paint over!
Blue

Lastly, let’s talk about blue as a color for your yoga room. Blue in all its’ shades has a calming effect on us. So for a room for relaxing yoga and deep meditation, it’s quite fitting.
On the other hand, having a calming, blue yoga room might make it harder to go for more energized yoga flows. For me, personally, blue is too calming, it makes me sleepy.
And, it can be quite hard to paint over. So just as with purple, I’d recommend using blue only as an accent color, not to paint the walls completely.
Yoga room furniture
Alright, now that you know your general vibe and colors, it’s time to pick the furniture for your future yoga room!
Of course, there are countless options, but you want to consider how much space you have. For asana practice, you want to leave as much open space as possible. (Ever tried a power yoga flow in a really tight space? It’s not fun…)
Storage options
The best way to implement storage while also keeping your space wide open is to use storage furniture along the wall.
Yoga mat racks
Yoga mat racks have become super popular recently. They save lots of space, and therefore are one of the best ideas for small yoga rooms.
Rope baskets
There’s just something about rope baskets that makes a room more friendly. Is it just me?
Anyway, if you have a little more space in your yoga room, you could use these as storage options. They’ll easily fit your yoga mat and props, and can also function as decor.
Just make sure to match the color to your whole yoga room color scheme!
Meditation corner
If you have the space it can also be a really nice feature to have a dedicated meditation corner. Have a look at the following items and consider how they fit your meditation practice and space!
Meditation pillows
I personally looooove those giant floor pillows, combined with a smaller meditation cushion to raise the hips a little.
(Pro tip: Raising your hips above knee level when sitting cross-legged makes for a more upright seat and easier breathing while meditating.)
They can also really help visually pulling the whole room together, because they can serve as a color accent, too.
Meditation bench
Another option for sitting in meditation are dedicated meditation benches. They mostly come in wooden styles, but you can also find them with pillows.
They often look really beautiful, but be aware that unlike cushions, these benches don’t fit every body. For some they are too small, for others it’s a little harsh on the knees.
If you decide to invest into a bench for your yoga room, do a little research before and possibly try some benches.
Meditation shrine
For many, a meditation shrine is a necessary part of their yoga room. I’ve personally never had one, so I’m not the best person to advice you on this one. Instead, I’ll just give you a few general ideas for what you could put on your meditation shrine:
Meditation fountain
Let the gentle sound of water draw you deeper into your meditative state.
Candles
Candles are a super common prop for focus meditation. Rest your mind on the flame! Bonus points if you pick really nice candle holders that fit the rest of your yoga room.
Singing bowls
The frequencies of singing bowls can serve both as a relaxant as well as a pointer for your brain that it’s time for meditation.
Zen garden
A miniature zen garden to get more mindful? Sign me up!
Incense burner
Incense can help you relax. Just make sure to check with everyone else around if they’re okay with you using it. Unfortunately, it can have pretty bad effects on some people’s breathing.
Yoga room decor ideas
Okay, so let’s say that by now you know your colors, picked your furniture and decided about a meditation corner. Still, it doesn’t quite feel finished yet?
In that case, you need a little more decor according to your style!
Plants for yoga room
I would definitely recommend adding a few plants to your yoga room. They will not only level up the atmosphere of the room, they’ll also help with air quality. Kinda important when you thing about how important breathing is in any kind of yoga practice.
If you don’t have too much floor space, don’t worry! Simply go for a few cute plant hangers like these!*
Yoga room wall decor

Another super popular choice for yoga room decor is wall art. Many yogis like to use wall decor that’s “on topic”. For example, wall tattoos with yogic symbolism.
I also really like these simple, black and white drawings* or beautiful art prints like these.*
Again, there are so many choices, you’ll definitely find something to fit with your own, personal style!
Yoga room curtains
Lastly, let’s talk about curtains for your yoga room. For most people, these will be more of a decorative addition, rather than a protection from sunlight.
Which means, you’re not restricted to blackout curtains, and can choose freely from all types of curtains.
Make sure to not buy anything made with toxic materials (again, that breathing quality!), and otherwise simply fit it to the rest of the room in color and style!
For example, to go with my light and airy vibe, I would probably select light beige curtains like these.*
Enjoy decorating your yoga room!
I hope these yoga room ideas gave you some inspiration for decorating your space. If they did, please consider sharing this with someone else!
